THE FMT Treatment Process
Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) is an innovative investigational treatment that can resolve recurrent Clostridium Difficile Infection and other health conditions. During FMT, a faecal preparation from a carefully screened, healthy stool donors is transplanted into the colon of the patient. There are multiple routes of administration (e.g., via colonoscopy, enemas), each of which has unique risks and benefits.
On your initial consultation, Dr. Nathan Connelly will review your medical history, establish whether FMT is the right treatment for you and answer all your questions.
The FMT procedure starts at the time of booking. Once your procedure has been booked and your deposit has been paid and all of your post-op appointments have been made, all of our donors are booked. We use an extensive program with Vegan, vegetarian and fitness donors.
On the day of the procedure, most of our FMT patients are put onto an afternoon list at Warringal private hospital. We do that because it allows the patients enough time to have a great bowel preparation. And It allows us enough time to give our donors some time to come in late and make sure that the mixing is done appropriately.
When the faecal transplant is done, a colonoscope is inserted into the anus and through the rectum, around the large bowel to where the cecum is, and the substance is then injected into the cecum. This allows enough slow transit time for FMT go all the way through the bowel on its way out and actually fill in all of the spaces and divots the bowel actually has.
Post FMT Treatment
After the faecal transplant, which is usually done by colonoscopy in the hospital, you will come back for either enemas or for your one-week appointment back at our clinic. All patients, regardless of how many enemas that they are booked for after their last FMT treatment, whether it be enema or colonoscopy FMT, are then scheduled for a one week appointment, a one month appointment, a three month appointment, a six month appointment a 12-month appointment.
Note: After the final 12-month appointment, there will be a fee for each subsequent appointment after this. If you are required to go on to a new FMT program at any stage during this, the entire program will then start again, meaning you receive 12 month scheduled appointments after each FMT treatment.
Medicare Claims with Appointments
All patients will have the opportunity to use teleconference facilities. We usually conduct them via Skype.
It's very important to note that whilst our overseas patients may be able to claim something through their health insurance companies, as a national patient you may or may not be depending on your health insurance. We provide all patients with receipts so they can make claims.
Medicare can only be claimed if you are in an area of need or if you're actually attending the appointment in our rooms. If you are classified as not in an area of need, and if you do actually choose to use Skype or teleconference to have your appointment, you will not be able to claim anything through Medicare. It is very important to understand this.
